I was recently asked to produce two books for Superfab Shop presented by Danielle Brustman Studio for Melbourne Design Week 2025.
I had been working on what I thought might be a retrospective of drawings of my body parts – but it wasn’t working, not for this project. I needed something sexy. Meanwhile something on my white board behind me tapped me on the shoulder Magnum Opus. I did not read Charlotte’s Web until this year, the year 2025. Yes, that is right. THIS YEAR. Something so close to my heart now is my relationship to spiders. (No, I don’t have pet spiders, nor do I want any - I prefer to observe them in the wild). When Charlotte lays her eggs, Wilbur asked what the hell is that? And her answer? “Magnum Opus…my greatest work ever” – or something to that affect. April is my Charlotte. But she is so much more than that. She is my teacher, my muse. I watched her create 25 of her 28 egg-sacs over the course of 10 months from the comfort of my own backyard. I gently blew my warm breath on to her body to check she was still alive, and patted the hard shell of her body. She is not a hairy spider. She’s more like a crab.
